The Northern Doubles League plays DBM and has a competition of five rounds
each year. Each round in a one day competition, with two games. The competition
has been going since 1998.
The last round was held at the Derby Wargames Society Club on 24th June 2007.
Two teams from the Derby club took part with Graham Roberts and Justin Keely
using Early Crusader and Bob Amey and Chris Thorn using Ugaritic. Bob and Chris
had a very close win in their first game against Keith Murphy & Tim Kohler using
a Moslem Indian army with no fewer than 6 superior elephants! It was decided to
try and ignore these any take out the rest of the army. This was achieved with
about 1 minute of game time left!
Justin and Graham had a tougher time against Dave Hoey & Brian Mitchell with
their Komnenan Byzantine going down to an 8-2 defeat.
After a couple of pints and some of the excellent food provided by the legion it
was on to round two.
Justin and Graham found it no easier in the afternoon in their game against the
Sui and Early T'ang Chinese of Roger Greenwood & Alaistair Moore both good
experienced players.
Bob and Chris played the two Pauls, Johnston and Dawson, from York, with their
Warring States and Ch'in Chinese. The Chinese had lots of bows so the game
hinged on whether the Chinese could get their bows against the Ugaritic cavalry
or if the Ugaritic blades could get into the Chinese bows. The Chinese got to be
the attackers so first blood to them. The Ugaritics took an early advantage by
killing 3 fast blades in an even fight. The Chinese however evened the match
killing a number of the blades with bow fire. They then took the advantage
coming down hill with their spearmen into the Ugaritic blades ordinary. But the
blades held and the game ended a bloody draw. The two Pauls ended up as winners
of the Derby round with Bob and Chris third. A good day was had by all and they
want to come back again next year!
The year to date results again sees the two Pauls in top spot with Bob and Chris
two points behind in second place. Two rounds still to go and all to play for;
Manchester 30th September and at the Armouries in Leeds 25th November. The
latter is a good round to go to as it is in the museum and there is lots to see
and entry is free (car park quite expensive). Come and play if you are a DBMer
or come and support if you are not its only 1.5 hours drive and a good day out.
